What is Orthotics?

It is estimated that currently over 2 million people in the UK need an orthosis. So, what is orthotics and why might someone need it?

Orthotics sometimes termed as ‘surgical appliances’ is a branch of medicine where a device such as an insole, brace or splint is prescribed that is externally applied to the body for one of the following reasons:

  • to improve or restore function and stability.

  • to decrease pain.

  • to offload vulnerable areas of pressure.

An orthosis can be either stock or custom made but primarily it is prescribed on its suitability.

What happens in an orthotic appointment?

An orthotist takes a full medical history, assesses your areas of concern both in seated, standing and gait, measures or casts you for a device if needed and if necessary, refers you to any other medical professionals.

How often should I expect to see an orthotist?

This is dependant on the reason for an appointment. If it is for a simple reason such as an insole or brace then an initial consultation would take place, followed by a fitting appointment. From this point a yearly review is recommended. If you are deemed a high-risk patient such as a diabetic or neurological patient, then regular check-ups are recommended.

Will an orthosis solve my problems?

Like the above this is dependent on the reason; some devices can help resolve an issue, but some devices may require rehabilitation to gain the full effectiveness of the device.
